There are a lot of people who want to volunteer but just cannot seem to find the time for it. This is not unexpected, considering how busy life can get with children, family, work and other obligations. Fortunately, there are a few helpful tips you can use to reach your volunteer goals and stop putting it off any longer.
1. Planning is essential if you want to meet your volunteer goals, or any goals in your life for that matter. If you just go through each day without any planning, chances are everything is pretty jumbled up and before you know it, the day is over. By planning your days ahead of time, you can stick to this schedule and know exactly what you have to do and when you have to do it. This allows you to get more out of your days by having a basic plan to follow.
2. Keep your volunteer goals simple at first, then get more ambitious as you continue to meet your goals. If you start off with something small, like picking up litter around your home, then work up toward a more ambitious goal, such as traveling to Africa to help feed children in hunger, you do not put as much stress on yourself at first. Meeting your goals boosts your confidence and makes you realize that you can fit time in your life for things like this.
3. Invite a friend or family member. When you have someone in on it with you, it gives you more of a push and that motivation you need to stick to your goals and actually achieve them. Keep it simple. You have work and other obligations already and probably do not have much free time for yourself to start with. Forcing yourself to spend every second of what free time you do have volunteering can wear you out. Keep it simple; even a couple of hours a week spent volunteering and you can give yourself a pat on the back.
4-5. Keep track of your goals and give yourself a reward when you meet them. Sure, you are getting the obvious reward of feeling good about yourself, but having a specific incentive also helps keep you motivated and working to meet your goals.
6. Make your volunteer goals public. If you tell lots of people what you are doing it pushes you and you are less likely to procrastinate. The most important thing is that you are doing volunteer work and this has a meaningful, positive impact not only on you and your life, but those around you too, who see what you are doing and are more likely to start volunteering themselves.
